Dealing with flooded homes is something that most people never forget. When your home is flooded, there is a lot of work getting it put back together, and you will want to do everything in you power to ensure it does not happen again. Some things are unavoidable, but there are some improvements that could save your home in the future. Here are some improvements that could save your home from future flooding:

1. Raising Your Foundation Higher to Keep Flood Waters Out

Many homes have foundations that can easily be raised to keep them out of the way of rising flood waters. One way is to jack the home up on large piers above the dangers of flooding, which is common in coastal areas. If you have a crawl space, you may also want to consider having the height of the crawl space raised to keep your home above flood levels. This type of improvement is usually not possible for homes built on slab foundations, but it can be done for basement homes. If you raise the height of basement walls, consider solutions like using waterproof materials to finish the basement, such as composite wall panels and vinyl flooring.

2. Landscaping Improvements to Keep Flood Waters Away from Your Home

One of the first lines of protection from rising waters is your landscaping. You want to make sure that your property has a good watershed design that allows water to flow away from your home. In addition, consider things like flood walls and other barriers that can be added to landscaping to keep flood waters away. Consider landscaping designs that improve drainage to keep water away from your home.

3. Fight Back Against Flood Waters with Waterproofing, Drainage and Pumps

Even with measures to keep flood waters away, you want your home to be protected. To start, make sure that your home's foundation is sealed with a waterproofing system to prevent water from seeping in. Inside your home, make sure that low areas like finished basements have the appropriate drainage systems to deal with any water that does get in your home. Your home should also have a sump pump to deal with any water that gets in. Sump pumps are commonly installed in basements but can also be installed in crawl spaces to protect against flooding.

To protect your home from future flooding, consider some of these improvements to keep flood waters away. Contact a mold remediation service to treat your home for mold that often comes with flooding and can be a problem later when you have completed the restorations.
